This is the third and last opening of the lapis manalis. Along with the 24th of August and the 5th of October, the three days of opening to the underworld occur after the summer's solstice, that is, when the sun remains below the horizon more than it is above. The ritual removing of the lapis manalis may pertain to releasing a build-up of infernal pressures. Ostensibly it is to allow the spirits of the netherworld, the di manes, a temporary access to the upperworld regions. The fruits of abundance are offered by placing them into the mundus when the lapis manalis or covering is removed for the day.
