Hail Janus!
Hail Juno!
Hail Carna!
Hail too to Mars!
Keep the striges from us!
And may we prosper in both body and spirit as light now approaches the zenith!
Salve Iane!
Salve Iuno!
Salve Carna!
Salve Marte!

Like the Kalends of March, April and May, those of June tie together both celestial and terrestrial deities. The first of June, known as the Kalendae fabariae in honour particularly of the goddess of the physical body (viz. carnal), was an occasion to consume bean-gruel and lard. Carna has the power to ward off the negative and harmful spirits known as the striges.

Ovid mentions that a temple to Mars was dedicated on this day beyond the Porta Capena, so I have included him in today’s invocation as well.
